It is sad to record the passing of Alan Luxton, a stalwart Old Boy from the Waikato Region. Alan was a member of the 1949 1st XV which is regarded as one of the most successful teams in the School’s history.

Five years after leaving school the majority of this team and their wives and families, had a reunion. It proved to be so successful that it was decided to stage a similar get together somewhere in the North Island every five years. As anno domini takes its toll the numbers attending have decreased and the intervals between such gatherings have progressively shortened until they are now virtually annual events.

In 2008 Alan hand-crafted a model rugby ball from a piece of three thousand year old Kauri. He, and his fellow “forty-niners”, presented the school with this handsome trophy. Alan wished this to be awarded annually to the player of the 1st XV who exemplifies the character of the team and does the most to keep the spirit intact.

Holders of the trophy since 2008 are as follows:

2008 - Liam McBride

2009 - Phillip Mischefski

2010 - Rhys Marshall

2011 - Matthew McDonald

2012 - Byron McDermott

2013 - Gabrielle Lauderdale-Smith

2014 - Liam Rowlands

2015 - Bradley Slater

2016 - Martin Snoxell

2017 - Corrigan Millar

2018 - Kristian Gent-Standen

2019 - Rowan Slater

2020 - Jone Rova
