Five years after leaving school the majority of this team and their wives and families, had a reunion. It proved to be so successful that it was decided to stage a similar get together somewhere in the North Island every five years. As anno domini takes its toll the numbers attending have decreased and the intervals between such gatherings have progressively shortened until they are now virtually annual events.
In 2008 Alan hand-crafted a model rugby ball from a piece of three thousand year old Kauri. He, and his fellow “forty-niners”, presented the school with this handsome trophy. Alan wished this to be awarded annually to the player of the 1st XV who exemplifies the character of the team and does the most to keep the spirit intact.
