Aucklander John Paul encouraged some of his old school mates and fellow members of the 1968 1st XV to join him for the annual Tauranga Boys’ College match played on The Gully.

While John was gathering his group, Kevin Taylor was rounding up members of the 1965 and 1966 teams. Max Carroll arranged for after match drinks and nibbles to be held in the lounge of Jean Sandel Retirement Village.

When he arrived at the game one of the first people he met was Mark Donaldson from the 1962 and 1963 teams. Quite unannounced he had brought along Geoff Old, John Gilmer and Bruce Middleton. Unfortunately an accident in Levin forced Richard Willis and Hylton Tuckett to turn back to Wellington.

Old Boys’ were invited to an after match gathering in the Hostel Dining Room to meet the players then about 20 Old Boys’ and some of their wives spent a very pleasant hour or so at Jean Sandel. Captain of the 1965 team, Ian Frame could not make it to the game but joined the group there, as did resident and former All Black, John McCullough who attended Stratford THS.

The group expressed its appreciation to the management and residents for making them welcome in such comfortable surroundings.
